Who will motivate the motivator?

If you are someone who is always and willingly making yourself available to others to inspire and motivate them to pursue their goals and to heal from broken relationships, there will come a time in your life when you need someone to motivate you or encourage you to start again or keep going. So what do you do when you, the motivator, need motivation?

Being a leader or motivator can be highly rewarding, but one needs to be careful because this named or unnamed position can be quite demanding. People tend to believe that you are always motivated and upbeat, and should always be available when they need you. But the truth is that sometimes it is easier to tell others the ‘right’ words than it is to tell yourself when things are not going as expected.

As hard as this may be to accomplish, self-motivation is what is required to keep you moving and to continue to help yourself and others to pursue their goals and to heal. In truth, the motivator is the one person who is responsible for self-motivation. Here are some ways to stay self-motivated and renewed:

  • Find time to have a detailed and deep conversation with your Creator.
  • There may be persons in your circle who inspire you and impact your life like how you impact the lives of others. Seek encouragement from them.
  • Do some research on persons who are known as motivational sources. They can be persons who have passed on but have left an impression on you. These persons may also be public figures who you do not have a personal relationship with. Find out what made them successful and use the strategies or techniques to have similar outcomes.
  • Think about finding a mentor. Look for a person who you would like to emulate, and who have had successes in the areas that you aspire to improve or excel. Find out if he or she would consider being your mentor by making it clear that you would not impose on their time, but would like to be able to check in occasionally to get encouragement and feedback. You could ask this person what actions are taken when there is a need to be motivated.
  • Find speakers or authors whose work inspires you. Read their books, listen to their speeches, and learn what you can from them. For ongoing words of inspiration and motivation, listen or read their work every day. This can help you not to fall into the demotivation trap so you can stay focused on yourself, your goals, and that of others.
  • Iron sharpens iron, so it is advised that you become a part of or create a group of like-minded people to ensure that you have human interaction. You are expected to grow and learn from the knowledge and experience of others and you can help them to grow too.
  • Very importantly, take an inward look. Design times to have reflections on life in general, your actions, accomplishments, experiences, and outcomes. Also, reflect on any knowledge gained or lessons you may have learned from your experiences. Evaluate the goals you may have achieved, no matter how ‘small’ they seem.
  • Consider journaling. This can help you to capture and review ideas and insights that may have otherwise gone unnoticed or forgotten. Record lessons and insights along with experiences and activities.
  • Take care of any physical need or ailments that you may have that could distract you from what you want to do. Don’t allow situations to control your mind and your life.
  • Purposefully bring to mind feedback from people who you have helped and experience deserved satisfaction from it.

George Patton a U.S. army general sent a message to his troop during the Second World War: ‘Fatigue makes cowards of us all. Men in condition do not tire.’ Sometimes all it takes to start feeling motivated again or refueled is to rejuvenate the mind and body through well-deserved rest. This rest could be in the form of a vacation or retreat for those who can afford it, or simply and consciously making time to do absolutely no physical and mental work for periods of time during the day; and/or doing things from your self-care list. (I am assuming that you have a self-care list and for those who don’t, I am hinting that you make one). The longer you stay in the valley or on the mountaintop, the harder it is to go in the opposite direction. So, whatever you decide to do to motivate the motivator, do it quickly and ensure that you don’t stay demotivated too long.
