In April 1989, the Government of Jamaica terminated the contracts of all private security guard firms working at the Jamaican ports island wide. Following the discovery of approximately 4,000 lbs of marijuana on an Air Jamaica air craft in Miami. It became evident that the private security companies were compromised and unable to deal with the drug trafficking activities, which threatened Jamaica , image and economic future.
The Ports Security Corps was created on April 17, 1989 as a Government agency under the Ministry of Transport and Works, with a mandate to conduct contraband and narcotics screening effectively, efficciently and in the public interest. PSC is self-funded through rates charged for aviation and maritime security services to our Clients/Port Operators.
